About the Center — Goals of the Policy Center

The GWPS Center's efforts will build on the ADGAP/University of Cincinnati Department of Public Health Sciences' Status of Geriatrics Workforce Study. For the past eight years, this Hartford and Reynolds' Foundation-funded workforce study has created, maintained and disseminated comprehensive, longitudinal information concerning the growth and status of geriatric medicine. The new GWPS Center will contract with the University of Cincinnati, which will serve as a source of quality data and reports. AGS will coordinate the project, integrating GWPS Center activities into targeted legislative and media efforts, and enhancing dissemination of study data. This data significantly enhances the Society's ability to raise awareness of key issues in geriatrics training, workforce trends, and practice among lawmakers and journalists.

The goals of the Center are to:

  • Provide clear, accessible data on geriatrics training and healthcare delivery issues;
  • Provide rapid responses to those seeking information or commentary on geriatrics training and healthcare, with current data and analysis;
  • Guide and supporting the implementation of recommendations from the recent Institute of Medicine report, Retooling for an Aging America: Building the Health Care Workforce;
  • Guide current and future national policy through provision of high quality longitudinal information on the status of geriatric medicine training and practice;
  • Refine geriatric medicine workforce projections to reflect the clinical care needs of older adults and how the workforce can best be deployed to meet these needs; and
  • Analyze progress in creating faculty in all medical disciplines who have sufficient geriatrics content expertise to train the next generation of providers.
